Good Morning Honoured Students and Instructors of EMAC Canada,

EMAC Canada's Spring Gasshuku 2010 was a TOTAL success.  Thank you everyone who participated, thank you everyone if you drove someone to the gasshuku or tournament, thank you if you paid for some one to attend, thank you if you volunteered your time to share your knowledge, thank you if you brought some of your students, thank you if you took time to referee at the Friendship tournament, thank you if you took time away from your family, thank you if you taught a class so someone else could attend, thank you!  We could not have done it without all of you!

The weekend was Awesome!!  The main reason it was so awesome in my opinion is that, egos were left at the door.

The EMAC gradings are getting better and better each time.  Congratulations to all grading participants.

The instructors shared their knowledge with out any hesitation and the students receive it like their cup was empty.  The students who attended were practicing SHOSHIN, if they knew it or not.  Shoshin means 'beginners mind'.  This is where your attitude is that you ALWAYS have an empty cup, or you are seeing things as if it was the first time.

Your cup is not full where by nothing new will go in.  Even if it is something you already know (e.g. high block, Geki Sai Dai Ichi or Taikyokyu

shodan) you are seeing it as if it was your first time.  We are truly proud of everyone, thank you.

The seminars were awesome!  What a group of talented Chief Instructors EMAC Canada has!!  Our instructors keep getting better and better because they continue to train themselves.  At this gasshuku we were able to again showcase the versatility of our organization.  From Chito-Ryu Karate, Goju Ryu Karate to iaido, the art of drawing the sword to kobudo to self defence against weapons and an EMAC Black belt only seminar, all in all just speculator amount of knowledge at this EMAC Canada gasshuku.  Thank you to all EMAC members who participated.  Remember knowledge is only potential power, you have to put it to use for it to become true power.  So please practice what you learned.

The tournament showed good competition, good effort, good sportsmanship and people having fun. The competition was tough but all Dojo teams faired well.

Congratulations to all the Dojos that brought teams and to all participants.

By doing competitions it brings people just a little outside their comfort zone so it is a good test of COURAGE.  Remember there is no good and there is no bad, there is only experience.  A big thank you to the referees and judges that stayed to help out and to our score keepers.  We need all of you to run a successful event!

We see many future Black Belts of the organization and future chief instructors of the organization so it is up to everyone to accumulate that knowledge and put it to good use.  Black Belts are future gasshuku instructors so you to should be acquiring knowledge but at a higher level.

Keep checking www.eastwindbudo.org for pictures from this event and for information on the EMAC Canada Fall Gasshuku in late Oct 15 & 16, 2010.

Thank you to everyone who made it a success.  We could not have done it without each and every one of you.

Chief Instructors feel free to forward this e-mail on to your members.

Yours in Budo,

Super Awesome EMAC Fall Budo Gasshuku!  Thank you to everyone who made it possible.  Thank you Hanshi Merriman for being our special guest Instructor.
Thank you ALL EMAC Chief Instructors for your support at this event we could not have done it without you and your students support.  Thank you and please pass on our thanks to your students for us!
Timmins Goju Ryu You were missed.  We wish Fontana Sensei a speedy recovery from his surgery.

Dear Honored EMAC Chief Instructors,

Sensei (In Japanese Sensei is plural) thank you very much for your support

and professionalism this weekend at the EMAC Fall Budo Gasshuku 2009.

Without you it would not of been such a success and a super awesome weekend.

It was beautiful to see almost all EMAC Chief Instructors on the floor

working and training in great harmony. Timmins

Goju Ryu was missed but we wish Fontana Sensei a speedy recovery from his

surgery.  This was a special gasshuku this time around in that we had Hanshi Chuck

Merriman with us.  It was a special treat for the brown and black belts to train with Hanshi

and then for everyone to sit and listen and ask questions to this legend of

the martial arts.  Congratulations to all the people that graded Friday night you made your

chief Instructors and all of us in EMAC proud. It is vital to keep a high

standard in our coalition so one day EMAC will be the group everyone looks

to for quality in martial arts.  Everyone put forth excellent effort and the quality of the grading I felt

was good to very good. There are always some techniques to be improved on

but that is why martial arts is a journey of a lifetime and not a 4 year or

7 year or even a 30 year course.  All in all this weekend's Friday night and all day Saturday event was a

success because of YOU! On behalf of EMAC Canada thank you all for your

support, your teaching and for emphasizing to your students how important

these seminars and extra events over an above normal dojo training. Thank

you Sensei Lowry for hosting and for all your hard work in organizing this

amazing event. The grading was good and I believe the candidates felt they

were tested and they will treasure the moment you help to create.

It is already in the works to have a referee and judging course again in

order to certify more EMAC judges and referees.

Thank you once again I was my honor to be with you people last weekend.

Please feel free to pass on to your students and let me know if I missed

anything.

Yours in Budo,

Mike Sywyk

Breaking News!!!!  EMAC Fall Budo Gasshuku to feature 9th DAN Hanshi Chuck Merriman!  Pre-register before Oct. 15/09.  Limited registration!!

January 1, 2006 marked the beginning of a new martial arts organization, 'Eastern Martial Arts Coalition'. We are a group of people willing to lower our own ego so that we can learn and grow together. We are not competing with any other group, federation, organization, or business. We are in the business of training, so that the Martial Arts we treasure may be passed on to others. EMAC was co-founded by Brian Lowry and Mike Sywyk at the urging of their fellow Chief Instructors in Eastern Ontario, and also many of their own students.

EMAC President Brian Lowry, 5th degree Black Belt, Chief Instructor for 15 years at the Napanee Karate Club, has served a three year term as National President of another Martial Arts Federation. Sensei Lowry brings structure, organization, and good business practice to any Dojo willing to learn. As a licensed teacher in Ontario's Public Schools for 33 years, with experience as a classroom Teacher, Guidance Counselor, Special Education Consultant, and Principal, his expertise encompasses many areas that Instructors can use in their own Dojo.

Sensei Mike Sywyk, Chief Instructor for 10 years at Eastwind Budo Life in Ottawa, and six times training at the Jundokan in Okinawa, continues his role as Technical Advisor. With membership in the Jundokan as an Affiliate Dojo, a strong working relationship with Sensei Jean Frenette, and wide experience in teaching many styles of Martial Arts in Canada and Europe, Sensei Mike Sywyk offers top notch instruction for anyone willing to leave their ego at the door.

The following is a list of Dojo Members in good standing with EMAC Canada.  We are very pround of each and every one of these Dojo members:

Christie Lake Karate Studio

Deseronto Goju Ryu

Eastwind Martial Arts

Labranche Martial Arts

Napanee Karate Club

Sakura Martial Arts (Perth and Smith Falls)

Timmins Goju Ryu - Sensei Tony Fontana

Woodstock Martial Arts - Sensei Roger Mabee

1000 Thank yous to everyone who made EMAC Canada Fall Budo Gasshuku 2008 a success.   Special thanks to Sensei Brian Lowry who was our wonderful host.  Read on...

Let me start off by thanking everyone who made this year's EMAC Canada Fall

Gasshuku 2008 a great success. If you attended the gasshuku, thank you. If

you drove someone to the gasshuku, thank you. If you paid for someone to

attend the gasshuku, thank you, if your dojo did a demo, thank you. If you

bought something at the gasshuku, thank you. If you helped to organize the

gasshuku, thank you. If you helped someone at the gasshuku then I thank

you! It takes people on many levels to make something like this a success

so once again I thank everyone involved!

This gasshuku we tested a new format which had much positive feedback. The

order of events worked out very well for members who live further away. We

will most likely use this format again for the Spring 2009 Gasshaku.

One thing that was missed was the Kingston group, unfortunately some things

came up and their members were not able to attend. To all of the Kingston

Members, we look forward to training with you soon.

You should feel as proud as I do to be doing what we are doing. The event

this weekend was a good size for EMAC Canada, a relatively new organization.

We are really quite small on the global level. Our mission in EMAC is to

preserve and promote traditional authentic martial arts. We are off to a

great start with EMAC being 3 years young. Thanks for your support in this

mission.

EMAC Canada has some events planned for early 2009 so stay tuned for the

calendar of events coming soon.

Yours in Budo,

Mike Sywyk

January 1, 2007 - Happy Birthday EMAC Canada!

EMAC Canada is officially one year old and still growing! Over the past year, Eastern Martial Arts Coalition Canada contributed to the development and growth of traditional martial arts. On the International level, EMAC sent members to Okinawa Japan, and hosted the Okinawan Masters when they returned to Canada. We continue to be associated with the Jundokan in Okinawa, where our students are welcome to train and certify.

Nationally, EMAC held instructional, grading, and referee seminars in various locations to bring a high level of consistency in our standards. Two Black Belt Gradings were held in 2006. These gradings thoroughly tested the candidates, while empowering them to demonstrate their best. Two friendship tournaments gave our members the opportunity for fair competition to test their skills, while two Gasshukus (training camps) provided a wide range of training opportunities for all members.  Special seminars were held for EMAC Chief Instructors only, and additional seminars for EMAC black belts only.  These seminars will ensure that our Chief Instructors and Black Belts will continue to grow and expand their knowledge. These are just a few of the events and activities that were hosted and or sponsored by EMAC Canada. This year we have many more activities planned and we hope you will be part of them.

EMAC Canada is growing. We welcome Sensei Michel Fleury and Neworld Martial Arts in Gatineau, QC to our family.  Sensei Michel Fleury brings much knowledge to our group and EMAC Canada members will benefit tremendously with him, his dojo and his students as members.  On this note, over the past year Sensei Lowry received enquiries about our coalition; we want to assure everyone we are very selective as to who we may admit to our organization. The strong ties and friendship that we have developed in EMAC will be carefully nurtured and preserved.

With more than seventy-five Brown and Black belts and hundreds of colored belts, EMAC Canada is a strong, vital association of martial arts students. We are in a great relationship with Kyoshi Jean Frenette and his Seishinkan Organization. Through Kyoshi Frenette we are able to train with many knowledgeable instructors, including world famous Sensei Chuck Merriman, and  Sensei Vince Morris, a Shotokan expert and Kyusho Jitsu (pressure point striking) specialist. Our relationship continues with the Jundokan dojo in Okinawa, the OKDR (Okinawan Kobudo) with Kyoshi Neil Stolsmark and through him Gakiya Sensei, the successor to Kobudo in Okinawa.  EMAC is alive and kicking and punching and grappling and jumping and striking pressure points!

Over the lifetime of EMAC Canada we will continue to lower our own ego so that we can learn and grow together. We are not competing with any other group, federation, organization, or business. We are in the business of training, so that the Martial Arts we treasure may be passed on to others.

All the best in 2007.

In Budo,

Brian Lowry and Mike Sywyk

I really appreciate everyone's support and we could not have such a great coalition and have such great coalition events if it was not for our great coalition members.

Some people seem to think that a coalition like ours can run by itself, but of course it can not. For this coalition we belong to, to have such great events like we have had this year it take lots and lots and lots of time, effort and hard work. Most of us don't know how many hours, and I am guessing in the hundreds, that Sensei Lowry has work to organize 2 black belt gradings, 2 opportunities for black belt only training, 2 gasshukus, an examiners course, a referee course, seminars, tournaments all this year and all for our coalition. Thank you Sensei Lowry!

I would also like to thank all the EMAC Canada chief instructors that came out for this wonderful day and a special thank you to Sakura Martial Arts in Perth for hosting this event, Thank you to Sensei Jamie Wright, Sempai Laurie Winter and Semapi Russell Lloyd.

There are more exciting events coming up next year including more gasshukus (training camps), more courses, more training, more tournaments, more gradings etc.

If I don't see you before the holidays have a Merry Christmas from our family to yours.

Yours in Budo,

Mike Sywyk

Limestone Karate Club

Napanee Karate Club

Sakura Martial Arts (Perth and Smith Falls)

Announcement: Eastwind Budo Life Centre is no longer a member of the YKKF.

We are now a full member in good standing with EMAC Canada and associate member with Okinawa Hombu Dojos for both our Karate (Jundokan So Hombu) and Kobudo (OKDR) training.

Our website is in the process of being updated to reflect these changes.
